British estate agent charged with selling Gaudi's Barcelona home

The former Spanish home of Antoni Gaudi has been put up for sale through a British estate agent by the architect's family.

While many Britons would be happy with a small villa on the Costa de Sol, Casa Vicens, located in the heart of Barcelona, comes with four kitchens,12 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms across four storeys in addition to a dining room with stained glass windows and an ornate roof.

Just like the Catalan architect's other great works, including the Sagriada Familia cathedral and Park Guell, also in Barcelona, the house is brightly coloured and covered with intricate detail and dozens of chimneys.

"This is more than a house," said Thierry Gilgenkrantz, the head of International Sales at London estate agents Bective Leslie Marsh, where it goes on sale today

"It is like buying a painting by Picasso. The owners are selling because they want to downsize. But they are very protective of the property. They want people who have enough money to look after it."

However, given the history of the house and its museum-like status, it is thought that it could generate its new owners millions of pounds should they decide to open it up to tourists.
