Avon island to go under the hammer

Fri 24th Aug, 13:41:11 BST

An island home on the River Avon which is accessible only by boat has been put on the market.

Osier Island, near to Wyre Piddle, was due to be put up for auction in July, but flooding made viewing impossible.

However, the estate agent in charge of the sale, Shipways in Pershore, has announced that it will go under the hammer in the near future, having already attracted a significant amount of interest from prospective buyers.

The house on the island has a guide price of £135,000 despite having no mains gas, electricity or sewerage, though a narrow boat will be included in the sale.

While the property would be considered as idyllic by many, one former visitor to the property has revealed that it has a tragic past.

Valerie Lewis told the Evesham Journal: "In the 1940s my uncle Ernest Woodward owned or rented the island, which we were taken out to a few times.

"It is lovely but there is also a sad story concerning the place that resulted in a tragedy for my family.

"In the autumn of 1947 or 1948 my uncle travelled to the island to close it up for the winter. On this day the river was running quite fast and half way to the island my uncle''s boat capsized, resulting in his death and that of his sister-in-law Lillian Hammond."

Osier Island will be auctioned off in Derby on October 3rd.
