Experts have warned people moving home to be aware of the risk posed by opportunistic thieves who may take advantage of busy homeowners during their move.
According to Simon Preston, chairman of online change of address service iammoving.com, people can be vulnerable as they prepare to relocate, urging people to be aware of what is going on around them.
"While visible packed belongings indicate that someone is on the move, the presence of additional tradespeople, estate agents and other professionals can mean that there are unfamiliar faces around the house," he said.
However, there are steps people can take to help reduce their risk of being targeted, such as not giving out spare keys if it is avoidable and checking that movers are reliable.
Andrew Scholey, the founder of advice site helpiammoving.com, adds that shredding personal documents that are no longer needed is important to help ensure "neither your belongings nor your identity are stolen".
The Home Office says that the chance of being burgled goes up around the time of a move and suggest that valuable items, such as jewellery, should be stored at a bank if possible.
