A Plymouth branch of Connells has given its staff a special guide to help them master some basic Polish in order to better serve their eastern European clients, it has been reported.

The Herald newspaper said that the branch made the move after receiving many enquiries from people wanting to buy or let a place to live, with branch partner Jane Nott telling the publication that people from Poland made up the second largest group of buyers in the local market.

"It seems to us that it is basic good manners to try and at least be able to greet people and say please and thank you in their own language," she explained.

Ms Nott said that the initiative had been greeted with approval from the Polish community, adding: "Since we''ve started using the odd word here and there in Polish, the customers are absolutely delighted with our attempts, although I am sure that our pronunciation is often overlaid with a Plymouth accent."

According to statistics from the Office of National Statistics, a growing number of Poles have opted to come to live in the UK since the country joined the European Union in 2004.

In 2005 alone, 49,000 people from Poland entered the country to stay for at least a year.ADNFCR-1143-ID-18357776-ADNFCR
