The property market in the south-west is holding up in face of gloomy predictions about the future of the property market, it has been suggested.

Research conducted by the Halifax found that house prices in the region fell by 0.4 per cent during the last three months of 2007, bringing the average price of a property to £211,404.

However, David Whitehead, a regional manager at the firm, commented: "A number of towns in the region continue to enjoy above average house price growth.

"Over the last year the average house price in St Austell increased by 26 per cent. Torquay enjoyed double-digit growth at 23 per cent."

Andy Goundry, Cornwall spokesman for the National Association of Estate Agents, told thisiscornwall.co.uk that the area has not been "as adversely affected by house price falls as other parts of the country".

Although the number of homes being brought to market has fallen over the last year, he pointed out that those who do decide to market their home are "serious about selling their properties" and "have made a decision to move on".ADNFCR-1143-ID-18435318-ADNFCR
