House prices rise in January

House prices increased in January, according to the latest figures from the Land Registry.
The organisation has published figures, revealing that the average property increased in value by 0.9 per cent month-on-month.
It took annual inflation to 6.4 per cent, with an average house price in England and Wales of £186,045.
The largest monthly increase was seen in the north-west, where growth reached two per cent.
This was followed by London and the East Midlands, both of which saw average prices increase by 1.5 per cent between December and January.
Annually, London outperformed the rest of the country by some distance, recording growth of 13.1 per cent.
The largest annual inflation was seen in flats and maisonettes, which increased in value by 7.6 per cent, followed by terraced houses (6.8 per cent).
