A typical detached property in the UK is worth £246,516, according to the latest figures from Nationwide.
The bank is launching a detailed report on different housing types in the UK and has started with detached housing.
Its report has found that the properties have seen their value increase by 2.9 per cent in the last year and 40.8 per cent in the last five years.
That figure is just below the UK average of 50 per cent for all property types but is still a significant rise.
According to the survey, the most popular region for detached properties is the East Midlands, with the area accounting for 32 per cent of all sales.
London is the least popular region, with just four per cent of sales.
The report also found that detached property owners tend to have an income well above the national average.
In addition, owners are more likely to have other investments and own two or more cars.
