Everything possible will be done to support the UK property market in the coming months and years.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling told reporters during a visit to China that the government is very much focussed on ensuring the housing market does not suffer big losses.
He said that action is already being taken to stabilise the market and more will be done in the future.
"We will continue to take whatever action is necessary to support the wider financial market and therefore, through that, the housing market," said Mr Darling.
"In relation to the housing market, you will be aware that we are working with the Bank of England to continue to support stability within the financial markets," he added.
The chancellor''s comments follow the publication of a report from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, which showed that market sentiment fell in March.
