East of England housing review splits opinion

Tue 13th May, 11:05:18 BST

A publication on the future housing strategy for the east of England has received mixed reviews.

The Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) for the east of England set out plans to build 508,000 new homes by 2021.

That is 25,400 per year for the next 13 years and the RSS also highlights plans to create 452,000 new jobs.

However, it has been criticised by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) for failing to take onboard the concerns of residents.

"People in the east of England will now have to bear a substantial environmental cost for the government''s growth plans over which they have virtually no say," commented Lawrence Wragg, chairman of the CPRE East of England.

The RSS has been welcomed in many quarters, with the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) saying it will tackle many of the issues currently facing Britons.

"The revised housing figures, up from 478,000 to 508,000 homes by 2021, will help tackle homelessness and meet the needs of the growing number of families in this region of the country," commented Gideon Amos from the TCPA.ADNFCR-1143-ID-18590483-ADNFCR
