Green Gadgets for the Home

Being green has never been bigger. So much importance and credibility is now attached to being eco-aware, it has passed the point of being a moral but inconvenient endeavour, and is now incorporated in all sorts of ways into our daily lives. With climate change a real issue, we still have a long way to go to change centuries of human avarice and vanity, but innovators and inventors are leading the way by appealing to one of our most common traits - a love of gadgetry. Not only will these products take your home into the future, but they'll save you a bundle into the bargain, and they make great gift ideas. Here's a guide to some of the best green products on the market...

Standby Buster

Recommended by the Energy Saving Trust, Standby Buster plugs into your wall and provides four sockets of its own so that you can use it with a number of appliances in the home. Simply use the remote control provided to switch off the supply to your TV, DVD player, digibox and stereo, saving you hours of wasted electricity. You don't even need to point the remote directly at the socket; it'll even work from the next room. At £14.99, Standby Buster is an ideal gift and a sensible addition to any home.

Stingray Solar LED Torch

It sounds like the punchline to a dodgy Irish joke, but this pocket torch uses powerful solar cells to charge an eco-friendly internal battery. It's compact size and keyring makes it the perfect portable flashlight. The cost is £4.99.

Rhino Radio

This windup radio will reward one minute's effort with an hour of continuous output. It has a carry handle to make it portable, and comes with an LED light. It's not cheap at £24.99, but will save in the long-term on batteries and electricity bills. For the less eco-conscious out there, it also comes with a traditional charging mechanism that plugs an internal battery into the mains.

Eco Balls

At £34.99, this washing-detergent substitute sounds pricey, but three Eco Balls go a long way, providing over a thousand washes - which works out at 3p per wash. They work by producing ionized oxygen to lift the dirt from your wash, and they won't fade bright colours like many detergents. They even soften clothes, so you can save on fabric softener too.

Solar Shed Light

This gadget sits on top of your shed and has a battery capable of storing 5-6 hours of light. It's perfect for potterers, or hobbyist husbands, and means you don't have to run a cable from your house to the shed. There are a range of solar shed lights on the market costing between £20-35.

British Gas offers a range of eco-friendly gas and electric services and products, including energy efficient boilers and boiler cover.
