The moving process: a guide for first time buyers

Buying a home can be difficult for first time buyers. From getting a mortgage to selecting the right property, there is a lot to consider. But, once all that’s done and dusted, you then need to move in. In this article we’ll talk through the moving process.

Getting furniture

Most people already have all their furniture from their old home, but not you. You’re moving in for the first time and unless you have lived in an unfurnished flat and bought your own stuff, it’s unlikely you will have any of your own furniture. Here are a few tips when it comes to getting furniture:

Don’t buy it at all. Instead, ask your friends and family members if they have anything they’re throwing out. Perhaps they have something lying around in their garage; they have a bed they’d love to get rid of or they’re looking to get in vogue with a minimalist style! You’d be surprised how much stuff you can pick up this way.

Wedding gifts. If you’re moving into a new home, there’s a good chance you got married recently or you’re getting married soon. So if it’s not too late, include furniture on your wedding registry.

Charity shops. You are moving into a home for the first time so you probably don’t have much money to spare. Let’s face it: you’ve just paid a deposit and with all the other moving expenses money can be tight. So why not head down to your local charity shop and see if they have any furniture you can pick up? If they don’t, you could also try going to a pawnshop and getting stuff that’s usually around 30-40% off buying price. If you’re willing to buy second hand, why not check out eBay? Sometimes you’ll also find new furniture that’s going for a fantastic price.

Moving stuff into your home

When you’re moving stuff out of your old home, put it all into marked boxes so it’s easier to locate when you enter your new home. Place the most important things on the top—toothbrushes, underwear, clothes and the ingredients you need to make your first cup of tea or coffee in your new home!

Plan in advance

Get everything set up weeks before you move in. Keep in mind that the internet, phone and television can sometimes take around 10 working days to set up.
